Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people age 65 and older, and for some younger individuals with disabilities or certain medical conditions.

Most people become eligible for Medicare when they turn 65. You may also qualify earlier due to disability, End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), or ALS.

Not always. Some people delay certain parts of Medicare if they are still working and have employer coverage. The rules depend on the size of your employer and the type of coverage you have.

Original Medicare includes Part A and Part B and is administered by the federal government. Beneficiaries can see any provider nationwide who accepts Medicare.

Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. These plans must cover everything Original Medicare covers and may include additional benefits.

Medicare Supplement plans help cover some of the out-of-pocket costs not paid by Original Medicare, such as deductibles and coinsurance. These plans work alongside Original Medicare.

Original Medicare does not include routine prescription drug coverage. Prescription drug coverage is available through Part D plans or through some Medicare Advantage plans.

Original Medicare generally does not cover routine dental, vision, or hearing services. Coverage options vary depending on how you receive your Medicare benefits.

You can always get official information directly from Medicare at Medicare.gov or by calling 1-800-MEDICARE, or your local State Health Insurance Program (SHIP)
